August 18, 1996
Russia defeats Sweden
STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Viacheslav Kozlov scored a power-play goal at 6:03 in the third period to give Russia a 3-2 victory over Sweden in a World Cup of Hockey exhibition Sunday night.
The Detroit Red Wings star scored with defenceman Peter Popovic of the Montreal Canadiens serving a cross-checking penalty for the Swedes.
Peter Forsberg, who won the Stanley Cup last season with the Colorado Avalanche after helping Sweden win the 1994 Olympic gold medal, had tied the score 2-2 with another power-play goal three minutes into the final period.
Johan Garpenlov of the Florida Panthers put the Swedes ahead at 5:23 in the first period on another power-play goal. Alexei Yashin of the Ottawa Senators tied it at 1:30 in the second period and Andrei Kovalenko of the Montreal Canadiens made it 2-1 for Russia at 7:07.
The game drew 11,781 fans at the Globe Arena, where organizers had installed a smaller North American-size rink. All World Cup games will be played on the small ice surface.
The Russians, who will play in the North American pool with Canada, the United States and Slovakia in the World Cup starting later this month, also beat Finland by one goal Friday (5-4) in Moscow.
The Swedes, coming off a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic in Prague on Friday, are in the European pool with Finland, the Czechs and Germany.
